Bugzee Lix is an Indie American rap artist loved internationally for his rap albums. In 2019 an artist from Manchester, UK named Sofian did a freestyle rap on the internet (mixtape madness) titled Bugzee Lix which received over 100,000 views which inspired Bugzee to be part of this animated film about his early life as a rapper growing up in the gang infested areas of Bremerton, Seattle, and Bellingham, WA from 1995 – 2003. This animated movie (available now on YouTube), and the soundtrack (available for pre-sale on 4/26, release date on May 1st has songs from 2002-2003, and recent new music as well).

Banded Future is an American hip hop duo formed in 2021 in Los Angeles, California, consisting of rappers/singers Zap Rath and Jericho Law. Spliffy Mars is an up and coming artist who burst onto the streaming scene in 2019. Growing up around areas of Hartford and spending time in the suburbs before moving to East Atlanta at 14, he claims he’d been to so many schools with so many different people and backgrounds, that this diversity influenced the variety in his taste in music and style.

Growing up listening to artists like Chief Keef, Nirvana, Kanye West, Jay Electronica, Future and Tyler The Creator are just a handful of his inspirations. His unorthodox catchy melodic type style is often compared to artists like Playboi Carti, Young Thug, or Chief Keef, but Mars has his own unique style and voice. As he raps and sings over hard hitting 808s and energetic ethereal melodies his music basically just makes you want to sit and listen so you can relate or get up and have a fun time. Having always had a natural talent for songwriting, it wasn’t until late 2018 that Spliffy Mars decided to release his music into the world via SoundCloud. All the songs are very specific to the style Mars has been embodying recently. You can very much describe his music as very fantasy like and bouncy having melodies similar to pop music or having heavy inspiration from pop elements and the genre itself. At the same time when he is not using his fast paced and hyper flows, Mars can dumb down his vocal state to a real calm and low vibrational tone that will seemingly set the mood for any type of activity that involves relaxation or being under the influence.

Being versatile between these two styles he calls “Pop Trap and Spacious Music” it makes the music more exciting and more pulling to the listener. It’s not like u have an album full of the same song over and over again. A prime example on this project is like listening to the third track “Her Dance” produced by platinum producer Pierre Bourne, being an upbeat song with a faster tempo and having a happier melody then going into the fourth track with the song opening with a slower paced tempo and a melody sounding like it came straight out of a 1990s arcade game. Going towards the end of the project the songs go into a real chill state and ends with “Friends Till The End” which is a classic.

Born in Owensboro; the industrial, medical, retail and cultural hub of western Kentucky, Gerry Smoot let the elements of his surroundings birth a multi-instrumentalist musician. Propelled to learn and eager to match his influences; Jeff Lorber, Prince, D’Angelo, George Duke, Art Tatum, and John Blackwell Jr., just to name a few, Gerry was on the “keys” by the age of 2.

With more inspirations from Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, Gerry was playing the drums by age 7, bass guitar by age 9 and having full music recording sessions by age 12. The dedication and passion for music was a born identity. This vision manifested itself when at the age of 15, Gerry accompanied gospel jazz keyboard producer Ben Tankard on the organ.

Koko Nova is the next buzz in the alternative pop scene. Her soulful storytelling is brought to life by her exquisite sound, vivid lyrics and carefully crafted sonic experiences. Her background in science lends a unique touch to her songwriting: abstract motifs and elaborate constructs. The song is a multi-faceted soul/electro-pop gem with a touch of funk and exotic sounds. On the surface it may appear just like another love song, but don’t get fooled so easily! Originally inspired by her love of (or rather addiction to) tea and of course by an important ex-lover, the song has a much deeper message. It draws attention to addictions in our lives: coffee, cigarettes, love, social media, you name it. The more you listen to the song, the more you start travelling through various visions and feelings that it evokes. Koko collaborated on her debut single with a talented producer, Retro Island Studio, who was able to help her bring to life all her visions.

There are multiple instruments throughout the song, but one in particular was key to giving the song a touch of exotic flair: there’s an Indian sitar motif right in the beginning that repeats a couple of times throughout the song, and connects with the tea theme.

Koko grew up in Hungary, the country of Liszt and Bartok, where she was introduced to the world of music as a toddler thanks to her parents. As a child, she loved dancing and singing and began playing the violin. During high school she decided to pursue her interest in science and set off to London to study Computer Science. After graduating, she worked in the corporate world. She thought she found her dream job when she one day realised that she was caged, and far from her free-spirited self. After working and travelling all around the world, and with a failed startup under her belt, Koko finally decided to pursue her lifelong passion for music. Eskeel releases her debut album “Moral Images”, with a healing song called “Trees”.

In her 15 years of songwriting “Trees” holds a special place in the heart of the young artist, Evely Skeel aka Eskeel.

Weeks after Evely got out of hospital having her thyroid removed she fought everyday to get out of bed. Being in nature, walking in the forest among the trees brought her peace and helped her heal from the mental wound that the very aggressive graves disease had caused her, a disease that had haunted her since her young teens. Physically drained and mentally exhausted Evely found comfort gazing at the trees while thinking about the animals and people that suffered fates equal or even worse than her.

She imagined trees holding these sufferers in warm embrace and healing them. This thought washed over her being in calmness and brought her a sense of relief.
“Even when suffering greatly there is strength in thinking about others who suffer as well and what you can do for them” she says.
The song came like a flash and it would be the first song on the album to present one of the key things in Evely’s music – Compassion.
The song kept inspiring Evely to fight for her life and find ways to heal. After three years she recovered and decided to release the song along with the rest of the album, hoping that the song will help others as it did for her.

Described by NOW magazine as a “tantalizing Afro-soul combo of folk, roots, desert blues and African continental music,” AfroSoul Volume III: Re’ is the new EP from Amai Kuda et Les Bois. It is the follow-up to their full length release, AfroSoul Volume II: MaZai, hailed as “earthy and rootsy and good for your ears” by CBC’s Errol Nazareth. Amai Kuda’s debut album, Sand from the Sea, was considered “one of the year’s most exciting discoveries” in 2012 (Nicholas Jennings – Canada’s foremost music journalist and historian).

Amai Kuda et Les Bois have been featured in NOW magazine and on CBC’s Canada Live and Big City Small World, as well as performed at venues like the Jane Mallett Theatre, Harbourfront, The Rivoli, and festivals such as Luminato, Kultrun, and Small World Music Festival. They’ve give workshops on music, decolonization, and African cultural knowledge at schools, universities, and community centres internationally. Selected as one of the ‘101 Standout Artists’ during the nationwide CBC Searchlight competition (2015), they have opened for Joel Plaskett, Kellylee Evans and Sarah Slean, and collaborated with M1 of Dead Prez.

Most recently the group won the Best Folk/Roots award and also placed 2nd for the Best Song across all categories at the Toronto Independent Music Awards. Whether on the street, the stage or in the studio, for Amai Kuda et Les Bois, music is about healing –the healing of the earth, our ancestors, and ourselves. 

Amai Kuda et Les Bois share a fluid and stunning new single, Ecouché. The piece is sonic magic -a spell for healing of the waters, it will arrive as the first single from Amai Kuda et Les Bois’ upcoming full-length album, EmUrgency!, to be released as a limited edition vinyl recording on May 20.

Channeled and sung entirely in a language of ancestral communication, Ecouché can never be performed the same way twice. The song was written and produced by Amai Kuda Yemoja Ile, with vocals, guitar by Amai Kuda Yemoja Ile, and second guitar from Jimmy Smalbach (Jimmy Kiddo).

EmUrgency! will be released on exclusive limited-edition vinyl next month, followed by a full-length visual album in the form of animated episodes, set for digital release this summer into the fall.
Ecouché is a sample of what audiences can hear from Amai Kuda et Les Bois as the months progress.

“The album is about my journey as a woman of African descent to overcome internalized sexism, racism and the negative stigmatization of African spiritual beliefs in order to come into my power as an artist, community-leader, and particularly as a traditional healer,” Amai says. “Similar to other ‘coming out’ processes this emergence process is filled with a sense of urgency as it is in fact a matter of survival.”

The Proper Authorities is the solo project of singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Keith Adams. Known primarily for his work with the bands Sound Mind and Giant Wow, where he shared bills with acts like Filter, Stabbing Westward, Meat Beat Manifesto, Alien Ant Farm, Moth, Jupiter One, Lab Partners, Dink, and many more. Adams created the Proper Authorities to branch out and work on his lifelong compositional and performance skills.

“I prefer to be formless, like water,” JM says. “I once heard a quote from Bruce Lee that said ‘If you put water in a vase, it becomes the vase,’ so put me in any music genre, and I become the genre, like water.”

Much like his genre-melding yet fluid ‘formless’ musical creations, Jesus Muhammed as an artist is a bit of an enigma. Music – for JM – comes to his mind in mental waves and flashes of colors, shapes and patterns.

Whether he has a mild form of the fascinatingly weird disorder known as synesthesia or it’s just the way his musical brain works – whatever the source of his genius, it’s a mesmerizing mix of electronica, hip hop rhythms, other-worldly vocals and street-style rhyming that he creates.

Born in Brooklyn and raised in Saint Albans, Queens, JM took music lessons from a former James Brown guitarist, and was surrounded by 1950s pop and 70s reggae played by his music-loving parents. They bought JM and his brother a full set-up of instruments as they were growing up, but while his mother hoped he’d learn to play classic pop songs, JM instead wanted to bring to life the music he heard in his head.

“When I first started making music, I was excited and anxious – I wanted to create more than I wanted to chase tale,” he says. “Creating music keeps me alive.”

A self-described loner and artsy brooding character as a teen, JM’s life revolved around his Walkman and a ton of CDs in his book bag. He wrote lyrics as a child, but it was a friend in High School that spurred him on to compete in rap battles – he would battle rappers and spoken-word artists from other neighborhoods, then go home and write more scathing rhymes to be ready for the next day’s battle. His musical passion turned serious as he started a group called tha Villianz Gang. They played some shows and had a great time, but massive egos and internal strife tore the group apart. JM’s rap-battle talent and reputation quickly exceeded his competition, so he decided to ratchet his music career up another level with a music manager. He’d go on to perform in small New York City venues, paying his music dues (as they call it) and learning the ropes of the music business and performing.

JM used this time to begin reinventing himself as an artist and knew that he was going to start making his own rules for his music and career. JM came out of his reinvention musically reborn, focusing intently on the visual aspect of his music, and the mystery.

“This is music I can see,” he says. “The art is a response to my existence.”

Kaila Love’s Sporty Empowerment Anthem Reaches NBA2k21 & ESPN.
Kaila Love is a Hip Hop artist from the Bay Area, CA who went from a homeless teenager to a college graduate on a full scholarship from UC Berkeley.

She started becoming known around campus for hosting Hip Hop events, being the president of the Students for Hip Hop Club, and designing a unique Hip Hop curriculum to teach a class on Tupac, and even performing her original music at her graduation in front of 25,000 people! Since graduating from Cal, she’s gone on to earn an additional degree in Recording Arts.

Finding out that there are less than 5% of women in audio engineering, she wanted to pave the way and show other women that if she can do it, so can they!

You can see the way she lifts up other women in her community through her most recent work, “Half Time” – which is featured on ESPN and in the NBA2k21 video game soundtrack and official playlist.

Perfect for Women’s History Month, this dynamic music video features women ranging from age 16 to 91. As an independent artist, Kaila Love is intentional with who is a part of her projects. For example, in the “Half Time” video – she features two Black-owned, family-operated businesses – King’s Boxing Gym in Oakland, CA and Soaring Eagles Taekwondo School in Vallejo, CA.

She states, “If I’m going to spend money, I want it to go back to the community – not just the one time payment I spend to rent the space, but money that’s generated beyond. For example, three members of my filming crew actually ended up getting paid memberships to the gym. This is what I seek to do throughout my career and on a much larger level – connect people and generate wealth for all those around me.”

Cincinnati, Ohio based Brian Napier JR. also known as The Great Raw records controversial album in his home studio, after nearly having an intense debate with a preacher. The Great Raw took his minor frustration & channeled it all lyrically. He teamed up with producers Verleins, Prxphesy Beats, Walk Among kings, & Blunt Chrxst in order to highlight his aggressive distorted vocals by increasing the sub & bass frequency of kick drums on hardcore instrumentals.

Echolily is one of those rare artists who come into your life without announcement. And never leaves. That’s what happened to us, and frankly, we love her all the more for it. This young, immensely talented woman, rocked our worlds with her brand new release, entitled rather appropriately “Under the Clocks (Stay)”. And the tune resonated with something so deeply embedded and thoroughly honest inside us that since then, we just can’t stop listening to this amazing track. It’s literally on repeat, and what we particularly love about it is that it never gets old.

You know how, with some songs, you listen to them one, two, ten times, but then after that, you’re kinda sick of them? That doesn’t happen with “Under the Clocks (Stay)”. Maybe it’s because of the echo chamber effect (since it was literally recorded in an echo chamber, true to the artist’s name). Maybe it’s Echolily’s hushed, sensual voice slithering into your earbuds and refusing to let go. Or maybe it’s the fact that with every new listen, you find another thing to hold on to. Another sound or fragment, or word that you just seem to understand a little bit better.

Echolily definitely isn’t one of those artists who scores one hit wonders, because her lyrics are just too complex for anything as mundane as that.
