We met with teenage pop and acting sensation Alexander James (AJ) Rodriguez who just dropped his debut music video for his second single ‘Your Smile’ – quarantine style.
Can you tell us a bit about your new record ‘Your Smile’?
I wanted to release a summer song that showcased someone’s smile using the backdrop of a few of Southern California’s stunning locations. I love the beach and so incorporating surfing or flip flops into the lyrics along with a girl’s smile was a must!
‘Your Smile’ is centered around a young girl’s captivating smile that is suddenly noticed by one of her friends, who is looking at her with a different appreciation for the very first time. Her admirer dreams of whisking her away for sandy toes and snow cones on the beach. The lyrics are about how she shouldn’t change a thing as she is fly just the way she is. It is fun, light and bursting full of summer!
Tell us about the music video.
Well, due to the current COVID-19 filming restrictions in Los Angeles, we had to be really careful, so I just had two of my friends and one videographer, plus my mum of course, on set.
We tried to incorporate some of Malibu’s most gorgeous hotspots, and of course me catching a wave at my favourite place, the beach.
Since releasing your debut pop record ‘My Crew’ in July, you have had some great results on the streaming services. Congratulations!
Oh yes, I am thrilled with the response to my music so far. We released my debut record ‘My Crew’ on July 7th and it’s so exciting to see it is currently pushing 200,000 streams. ‘Your Smile’ has been climbing at a rapid rate with over 105,000 streams on Spotify today. I am so grateful to everyone who has listened to the songs so far.
What’s up next for you?
I recording three songs at age twelve during the Los Angeles lockdown, and I am releasing one song consecutively each month, ‘My Crew’, which released on 07.07, ‘Your Smile’ on 08.08 and next in line is ‘Up To You’ on 09.09. I have a further three records penned for later in the year as well as a special Holiday song. I am super excited to tell you about that!

These lyrics hit me with an unexpected strength and emotion and resonated with something buried deep within myself. And I think it’s not an isolated case. I think it’s precisely this image of being lost, of not having a plan or perhaps having one but not knowing how it will turn out, that will speak to many, both young and old, who take the time to listen to Dominican artist Tehilah’s brand new track, “Dried Roses”.
Now, in order to truly understand this piece, it’s important that we look into the title, that we make an effort to grasp the complex and enchanting imagery that the young, talented artist has sprinkled into the song.
In popular mythology, dried roses (and dried flowers, in general) tend to symbolize bad luck or an ill omen. It’s believed that being gifted a dry rose, or even receiving one that is in-bloom but then quickly dies means the end of a relationship or generally a profound loss.

In Tehilah’s repetition of the line “I don’t need no dried roses”, this is exactly what she’s telling us, conferring a prayer-like feeling to her song. It’s as if she’s standing here, at the beginning of her journey, and hoping she doesn’t run into any bad luck or bad situations along the way.
It’s also a look back into her past and a resounding message of resilience. “Uncomfortable situations I avoided, Cause I need to be situated,” Tehilah tells us, suggesting that perhaps the dried roses are somewhere in her past, and that she escaped them, that she survived and found her place in spite of the bad luck that came her way.
And what I truly love about this song is that everyone encounters bad luck at some point in their life, don’t they? That’s what makes “Dried Roses”, with the sad, beautiful voice and the soft guitar sound, a universal track that’s very easy to relate to at any point in your life and in almost any circumstance.
“Dried Roses” has this incredible potential to become am emblem to a world that seems to have seen nothing but bad luck lately. And even if you don’t feel that way, even if you’re in a great place in your life right now, I still feel like you should really listen to this tune because… well, because when has good music ever been a bad thing?
There are some songs that don’t stop to ask you what your preferred music genre is or if you listen to this sort of thing or not.
Some songs are simply that good that they don’t actually need to ask, because they know you’ll listen to them anyway, and like them, regardless what your musical tastes look like.
One such song is the recently launched “Aether”, a fascinating collaboration between Maldivian drummer and artist Faizan and the Amadeus Quartet from Romania (a mix of violin, piano and cello).
We won’t bother comparing it with something you might know, because “Aether” is like nothing you’ve heard before. It’s a wonderful, compelling journey that takes you to a higher plane of consciousness through its catchy, memorably rhythm that just encourages you to dance and abandon yourself to the music.
The song also gives food for thought, as the story behind the music video is pretty impressive. In search of creative inspiration, Faizan seeks to connect with the four elements of nature (fire, air, water and earth), only to find something is missing.
He then stumbles upon the famed “fifth element”, which turns out to be aether itself, of course, and with it, encounters four beautiful muses (the members of the Amadeus Quartet) who spark his own imagination and guide his creative journey.
Set against a gorgeous backdrop of the exotic Maldives, we watch Faizan unleash his creative power over the handpan, the instrument that has so marked his solo career, but in the end, we learn it was all a dream.
This definitely raises some question as to the state of the artist in the modern world, as well as the far more general theme of man’s complex relationship to nature.

Texas P conceived as (Terelle Harris Sr.) a local of Fort Worth, TX, began his music profession in 2001. He marked to a little administration organization in the DMV region. Russian recording artist XTAXY is rediscovering her sound with her latest single Not Who You Wanted.
The 18-year-old prolific songwriter has been practicing and performing music since she was only 4 years old.
At the age of 13, she began writing her own original music, and since then, the world has been her inspiration. Her latest, and most personal, release Not Who You Wanted is a vibrant and upbeat hip-hop alt-pop sound that features XTAXY’s signature tone atop a trap-style beat.
In her own words, “It’s very dynamic and the energy is just so chaotic and powerful. I’d say the song is a statement by itself.”
XTAXY, who has performed in the past as Polina Butorina, says ,”This was the first song I wrote as XTAXY. Referring to himself as a “poor man’s Buddy Guy or Lightnin’ Hopkins,” Izzie cites bands like Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith as early influences, followed by later guitarists like Izzy Stradlin and John Frusciante.
But, it was the blues of Stevie Ray, Eric Clapton, John Lee Hooker, Johnny Winter, Muddy Waters, and of course, Buddy Guy, that inspired Izzie’s return to music.

THE FULL STORY OF IZZIE
Rewinding time to when I was growing up, I think ‘culture’ was a lot more defined and less fragmented as it is today.
So having those definitive memories of watching Star Wars as my first movie or listening to ‘Money For Nothing’ by Dire Straits as a very young child, was always a traceable origin point that has consistently defined my identity. Those powerful drums followed by that insane guitar riff had such a profound effect on me, after that I always knew that guitar would have some part to play in my life.
It was around 2004 I believe when I started a 3-piece rock outfit called The Deep Impacters along with Sim on vocals and guitar and Ray on bass. Of course that era was characterised
more by naïveté, the excessive love of inexpensive beer and camaraderie as much as the music was. Needless to say, that didn’t go anywhere although it could have. After that, for good or for bad, I actually fell out of love with music in general.
I was very disillusioned as to where music was headed and the commercialisation of the guitar where I actually didn’t pick it up for over a decade. Fast forward, and maybe a couple of years back I got the encouragement from some close friends and I figured “Why not?” If nothing else, it could be an interesting therapeutic exercise in mid-life. And from there one thing led to another, a rediscovery of authentic blues, ‘Leo’s Guitar’ comes out in Dec 2019, ‘Zephyrs‘ in Feb 2020…and here I am today. In terms of sound, I can see myself as a poor-man’s interpretation of Buddy Guy and Lightnin’ Hopkins :).
Honestly though, most of the confidence I got to do this came from listening to Lightnins records. To me he was the complete artist where had the words and the sound and he performed them in this fearless way which was really captivating. Having had that rubbed off on me, I’ve really tried to keep the guitar and bass playing as raw and gritty as possible. I generally don’t like the over-polished sound…I much rather prefer searching for notes in that moment and capturing that in my recordings.
I think part of the ‘fearless’ aspect was to free myself from the limitations we have nowadays where somehow the guitar has ended up being a competitive sport and the endless debates on speed and technical proficiency. I just feel playing with this level of freedom lends to a more natural ‘conversational’ sound and feel to the song which is perfect for blues playing. In terms of tone, I’m a Fender fanati and the hardest part is deciding which Strat or Tele to use on the day. To my ears at least there’s something so appealing about their tone and even when recording it’s as if this constant process of trying to ‘tame’ the strat which really keeps you on your toes…it’s just so much fun!!!
I actually consider myself very fortunate as far as influences are concerned. Growing up it was of course listening to the likes of Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin and just being in awe of the phenomenal musicianship coming out of these bands. And growing up a few decades back, as a fan I’d really get invested in the lives off these musicians so somewhere I started
really getting drawn to band members who weren’t in the spotlight…guys like Izzie Stradlin and Brad Whitford Whose personalities aligned with my introvert personality…Later on John Frusciante was a huge influence…JJ Cale as well.
The great thing though is rock n roll is always a journey, and when I started reverting back to the roots more and more, particularly when I picked up the guitar again, discovering the blues artists was such a life-changing experience.
Going though hours and hours of records and live performances of Stevie Ray, Clapton, John Lee Hooker, Johnny Winter, Muddy Waters… its as if there was this world beyond the macro-world, full of these great musicians. But the one guy that really changed everything for me was Buddy Guy…‘Stone Crazy’ enough said!
Honestly, after I released ‘Zephyrs‘ I was thinking it might time to take a break from recording. But that all soon changed when I started practising and playing around in
general. I had a bunch of ideas lying around so that’s now got me working on the third EP which is titled ‘On The Pull’.
This is one is a definite back to the blues record…and already I can tell its just going to be very, very raw, very dirty record, and I really want to try and push the boundaries a bit in terms of the lyrical themes as well. I’m already getting excited about it because it’s reverting back to form after ‘Zephyrs‘ which was such a shift in gears. Hopefully I should have it done and available by May this year.
Personally, song-writing has to be an introspective experience, so to speak. It has to mean something to me more than anything else! I don’t have the ability to write a generic song because I wouldn’t know how to construct the lyrics to it. I’ve always believed that the experience of writing a song has to be built around trying to capture human experiences based on realism…honest human stories…
If we take the Leos Guitar EP, ‘Two In The Bush’ and ‘Lightnins-a-Howlin’ are just basic commentary on the advantages that the elite possess and how to get by on a day-to-day basis by playing the blues, while ‘Dorian’sLament’ is my personal experience of keeping grounded to my roots while dealing with a world that’s socially and technologically evolving at a rapid pace.
Sometimes it seems most of my lyrics and song-ideas end up coming from just watching the news.
Finally,I’d really like to send out a message to musicians and artists who are dealing with a lot of online ‘trolling‘. It’s sad that there’s such harshness out there sometimes and that can
be a deterrence to young musicians learning their craft, or even great artists who may just choose not promote themselves… Be yourself! As a severe introvert, it has always been difficult for me to publicize or promote my music.
But once you realize that it’s your own creation and it’s something you will carry with you forever, own it and be proud of what you’ve accomplished.
We live in a world of arbitrary are irrationally harsh, but it’s important to believe in what you do and what you create!

The History of BSR
Busking since high school, the college dropout has made his way across the country playing to anyone who listened. His talent and dedication lead to sharing the stage with artists like DAWES, WILD and Briston Maroney.
As a teen, one of Bryan’s favourite activities with his friends was climbing water towers and hanging upside down from the top by only their knees.
Bryan was notorious for doing what he wanted, when he wanted, including sneaking out of his parent’s house and hitch-hiking a 10-hour ride to Florida to surprise his girlfriend on the beach.
More recently, Bryan’s brother almost lost his life in a car accident. Dealing with those feelings inspired his musical journey that brought him unforetold adventures.
He often tells the story of being attacked in a convenience store which:
“lead to a full-fledged movie-like fight that included knocking over shelves and throwing beer bottles. The store was destroyed.”

N2BLÜ – THE FULL STORY
The previous hit single from N2BLÜ was entitled ‘NSA’.
Born in New Orleans, Jonathan Arceneaux started singing not long after he learned to talk and hasn’t stopped singing since!
At a very young age Jonathan began his career as a singer in a church choir and started taking voice lessons in both classical and musical theatre styles. During his High School years in Baton Rouge, LA, Jonathan continued singing in the choir and participated in several musical theatre productions. He also started to tap into his writing talents as a freshman in High School, drawing inspiration from some of his favourite bands and artists like Better Than Ezra, Duncan Sheik and Savage Garden.
Over the years following, Jonathan began to realize that his true passion was singing and writing Pop music, so he changed his focus from classical and music theatre to be a full time Pop singer/songwriter. He is a passionate, true artist with emotional expression through his writing, production, and performance. Jonathan also enjoys collaborating with other artists to meld unique tastes in sound and texture.
In 2008 he worked with hit producers I-ROC (Universal Music/HappyMadison Productions/BZEE ROC) and RADIO (Chris Brown’s “Dreamer”/Blake Lewis’ “End of the World”).
As a result of the collaboration with RADIO in 2009, Jonathan released “From TheAshes”, under the name Jay Arseno, his sophomore follow up to his debut album in 2008, “Face In You Crowd”, under the name Jonathan Adam.
After the loss of his father to kidney cancer in August of 2009, Jonathan took some time off from music and in 2013 he decided to move from his home in Houston, TX to Los Angeles, CA for an immersive experience in the heart of the music industry.
While he learned a lot about the industry and himself, Los Angeles was not a good fit for him. So, in 2015 Jonathan decided to get back to his roots and move back home to the Big Easy, New Orleans. Not long after moving to New Orleans, Jonathan met Konstantin Smorodnikov, a personal trainer originally from Russia who had a love and talent for music as well.
Jonathan and Konstantin had an instant connection as friends and decided to start working on music together. While Jonathan came from more of a pop music writing background and classical vocal training, Konstantin’s background was in the club and dance music scene. The next couple of years lead to the duo developing a seamless blending of Jonathan’s lyrics and vocals and Konstantin’s beats and instrumentation to create a sound all their own. In July 2018 they were approached by Loren Israel to participate in his song writing mentorship program.
Little did Jonathan and Konstantin know that this would be an integral turning point in their musical journey.
After a year of instruction, guidance, and tough love from Loren and by honing their skills in song writing and lyricism, they have emerged as the duo, N2BLÜ.
Born and raised in Kostroma, Russia, Konstantin Smorodnikov fell in love with music at early age. It was the structure of rhythm and arrangement that most interested him.
Around 15 is when he was introduced to computer music production.
At 18 moved to America where spent most of his 20’s going out to local dance clubs and learning all he could about technical side of production and sound engineering. He drew inspiration from DJ’s like PeterRauhofer and Abel Aguilera.
In 2016 he met Jonathan Arceneaux. They realized that they both shared a passion for similar sounds and ideas in music and decided to give a musical partnership a shot.
